What’s the Biggest
Challenge Facing Nurses Today?
Depending upon who you ask, the answer may be different. From my perspective, the biggest hurdle nurses have to overcome today is gaining the right education for the new roles they must fill. Today’s health care system isn’t what it used to be. Under the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, there are even more changes on the horizon.
Then, there’s our nation’s changing demographics. There is an increase in older patients, more Hispanic patients, and increasing numbers of patients with certain diseases such as diabetes and obesity. How much of what is learned in nursing school prepares nurses for all this change? Also, have nurses been given the tools they need to be the advocates patients need nurses to be --- especially now as our health care system places more of the decision-making burden on them? Nurses, what do you think? Do you believe you would benefit, as well as your patients, with more insights regarding today’s health care market?
