Catherine M. Mullahy, RN, BS, CRRN, CCM
President
For over four decades, Catherine M. Mullahy has touched the lives of patients. Her clinical and direct case management experience spans all settings from home, hospital and hospice to critical care. Throughout her career, she has helped shape the course of excellence in case management, advocating for higher credentialing standards, certifications, ethics and performance monitoring.
In 1983, following her clinical work, Catherine founded Options Unlimited, a full-service case management firm providing utilization, case and disease management, along with employee risk reviews to businesses, insurers, municipalities and third party administrators. In 2003, the firm was acquired Matria Healthcare, Inc. and became its Case Management Division with Catherine as its Director. Later that year, she founded Mullahy & Associates, LLC, with the sole purpose of educating and training case managers to deliver the highest standards of case management.
While leading her own firms, Catherine also assumed key leadership roles within the profession. She has served as National President, Board Member, Chair of the Ethics Committee and Member of the Standards of Practice Task Force for the Case Management Society of America (CMSA). She was the National Chair, Public Relations Chair, Commissioner, Executive Committee Member and Chair of both the Certification and Compliance and Appeals Committee for the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) during which she led the development of its Code of Professional Conduct, and ultimately was appointed a member of the CCMC Editorial Board and representative to the Foundation for Rehabilitation, Education and Research (FRER). Additionally, she has served as: a Member of the Professional Advisory Board of Gentiva Health Services; Member of the Case Management Advisory Committee of the American Accreditation HealthCare Commission/URAC; and Editor of The Case Manager.
Today, she continues to share her passion, expertise and voice through her editorial contributions to leading healthcare and case management publications and as a speaker for prominent professional associations and organizations. Perhaps most notable of Catherine’s contributions is her authoring of the profession’s definitive textbook, The Case Manager’s Handbook, now in its sixth edition. The book, named the American Journal of Nursing magazine’s 1998 “Book of the Year,” is widely used in graduate and undergraduate nursing and health management courses throughout the United States and Canada, as well as 18 countries around the world.
In recognition of her major contributions to case management, Catherine is the recipient of: CMSA’s 2010 “Lifetime Achievement Award,” CMSA’s 1999 “Distinguished Case Manager of the Year” Award, and the Professional Rehabilitation Association’s 1997 “Rehabilitation Professional of the Year.” As further evidence of her continued striving to promote high standards in case management, two of Mullahy & Associates’ educational courses have received prestigious “Case in Point Platinum Awards.”
